Sesamebuns, that is!  That’s right, I took my 4 yo son ice skating today… probably (no, definately!) the most important and fun thing I’ve done lately.  Let’s hear it for the ORIGINAL reason for fitness:  fun.

:^)  Have a fantastic week!

Goodnight from Up North~

I’m having trouble articulating something.  Here goes.  I want to get in shape.  Not “back” in shape.  I don’t have any illusions about re-capturing my 18-year-old shape and size.  Besides, even back then, my habits were not the best, so I think I could actually be in the Best Shape of my Life if I would just give it some effort. I just want to get in reasonably good shape and take care of my health.  The part I’m having trouble with is describing (to myself) why.  Isn’t that weird?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been on some sort of a diet or “plan” so I could look better, lose weight, fit in a certain size jeans, etc.  Well, as we all know, that only gets a person so far in life.  There have to be better reasons than those fleeting things we call “looks” to spark an interest in taking care of ourselves!

Back in the mid-90s I got all inspired by Oprah, when she ran the Marine Corps Marathon in D.C.  I distinctly remember thinking 2 things:  1)  If Oprah can do it, so can I! and, 2)  What if my goal was to see what I could DO instead of how many lbs. I can LOSE?  That led to my running two marathons!

So what’s it going to be?  Why am I serious about making this effort?

  • I want something of my own.
  • I want a feeling of achievement.
  • I want to be absolutelyfabulous (at least reasonably so-)
  • Having energy would be nice!
  • Fitting into my clothes would be nice!
  • Feeling good would be nice!
  • I need something to strive for.
  • I need something to focus on that is rewarding and not destructive.
  • Wouldn’t it be nice to have more fond memories like the ones I have from my days of marathon-training and firefighting?
  • Who doesn’t want to show up to their 20-year high-school reunion (or their husband’s…ahem!) as a total hottie?
  • It sure would be nicer to “run” my stresses away than to drown them with food and/or drink.

Well, these are all good supporting reasons.  But what will it actually take to make me rise up with a hearty HELL YEAH and put some energy into taking control of my health and fitness?  What am I waiting for?  The Ultimate Pep Rally?  I don’t want to run out and join Weightwatchers, only to fizzle out by week’s end.  I need to get my reasoning straight.  Where do I go from here?  And why?  Is this what they call a Mid-life Crisis?  Hope not, I’m only 34.  I may be losing my mind.

treadmill; stairstepper; elliptical; and a wee bit o’ strength training (arms) but I’m not making a whole ‘nother entry just for that!  :^)

So today I added some new  (to me)  strength training to my workout…

With DH spotting me, so as not to accidentally squish myself, I did bench press and incline press…using just the bar.  Deep sigh.  And my arms feel like noodles now.  I could actually feel fatigue in my arm muscles this evening when I picked up the baby.  The baby!  The 15 lb. baby.  Good grief!

I will be strong again.  Mark my words.  :-I
